ORIGIN

KAGOSHIMA, JAPAN

Kagoshima, at the southern tip of Japan, is one of the country’s most important tea-growing regions—shaped by a warmer climate, open landscapes, and volcanic soil enriched by Sakurajima. The conditions here allow the tea plants to grow steadily and with depth, resulting in leaves that are vibrant, smooth, and naturally rich in umami. It’s a region that feels expansive and alive, where the environment plays a direct role in shaping each harvest.

Unlike more traditional tea regions, Kagoshima represents a more modern approach to cultivation. With a wide range of cultivars and carefully managed fields, producers are able to blend with intention—creating matcha that is balanced, consistent, and easy to return to. The result is a cup that feels grounded and approachable, yet still layered with quiet complexity.

WAZUKA, JAPAN

Wazuka, just outside of Kyoto, is one of Japan’s most storied tea-growing regions—known for its rolling hills, misty mornings, and centuries-old cultivation. Unlike the open fields of southern Japan, tea here is grown on steep, carefully tended slopes, where elevation and climate create slower-growing leaves with greater depth and nuance. It’s a place deeply rooted in tradition, where much of Japan’s highest-quality matcha has been produced for generations.

Our Okumidori Cultivar comes from Nakai Organic Farm, a small, family-run farm with over 350 years of history and a long-standing commitment to organic cultivation—something still relatively rare in Wazuka, where only a small percentage of farms are fully organic. The Okumidori cultivar itself is known for its more refined profile—more rounded, with notes that lean savoury and slightly sweet. It’s a more expressive cup, shaped not only by the cultivar, but by the care and philosophy behind how it’s grown.
