Komakichi Kubo Chasen
Carrying on his family's legacy, Tatehiro Kubo continues to perfect the craft of chasen making, having learned the craft from his grandfather, Isao Kubo.
These whisks are made in the region of Takayama, a historically famous area for chasen making in Japan.
The Kubo family has been perfecting this craft for over seven generations.
The rarity of the Komakichi Kubo chasen lies in its limited production. Due to the intricate craftsmanship and time-intensive process involved, only a small handful of these whisks are created each year.
We are excited to offer three different styles of Kubo Shirotake Chasens (white bamboo):
Urasenke School: The more common style of whisk used in a tea ceremony. Shaved thin to curl easy and create bountiful foam. 80 Prong.
Yabunouchi School: These prongs are rounded at the top and carved from small bamboo. 70 Prong.
Enshu School: Shaved from larger white bamboo, these whisks have thicker prongs and are straight in the middle with a modest curve towards the top. Structured with strings hidden inside to represent Enshu's philosophy of Elegant Simplicity or "Kirei Sabi". 54 Prong. This whisk works the best for a thicker matcha, Koicha.
For the longevity of your chasen, use a kusenaoshi (whisk holder) to preserve the shape of the chasen tines, and make sure the bamboo dries properly.
How to care for your whisk
Before using your chasen for the first time, soak the whisk in hot water for 10-15 minutes to unfurl the tips.
Afterwards, before each use, soak the matcha whisk in hot water for 1-2 minutes before whisking to soften the tines.
After making matcha, rinse the chasen in clean water to remove excess matcha and dry it in a well-ventilated place or store on a kusenaoshi (whisk holder)
* Avoid use of detergents. NOT dishwasher-safe.*

Komakichi Kubo Chasen

Finally...
an early morning to look forward to
It doesn’t need to be a weekend to have a slow awakening. When we create a morning practice that centers us for the day ahead, it becomes a sacred time not worth sleeping in to miss.
Every morning, as my consciousness gently comes into the room, I start to imagine the steps of making matcha. Carefully measuring with a bamboo spoon as the aroma of sweet grass hits my nose. Whisking the bright powder into a creamy froth, and intentionally sipping while the sun wakes with me.

We don't hate coffee (all the time)
Coffee is the number one beverage after water in America. Coffee is delicious, and the habit of making it may be keeping you more attached than how it makes you feel. Challenge yourself to start slowly cutting back, or replacing one cup with matcha and you may notice:
No jitters or crashes, just a smooth energy boost.
Less acidity than coffee, making it easier on the stomach
Less dehydrating than coffee, keeping you feeling fresh
FAQ
when will I get my order?
Orders are fulfilled in 1-3 business days. Depending on your location, shipping times vary, but orders should arrive within 5 business days after shipment.
how should I store my matcha?
We recommend storing opened matcha in a cool dark place (like a pantry) away from heat, light, and humidity.
The next best storage option would be in the fridge, but with caution.
Here’s what to keep in mind:
- Matcha absorbs moisture and odors easily, so keep it sealed.
- Let it reach room temperature before opening – Condensation can form inside the container if cold matcha is exposed to warm air, affecting quality.
Avoid the Fridge
If frequently used – Taking it in and out can cause condensation and degrade the matcha faster.
f not properly sealed – It can absorb fridge odors, affecting flavor.
where do you ship?
We ship to the US & Canada, hoping to expand one day!
