Aikenka Bamboo Matcha Whisk
Organic white bamboo, harvested from the wild forest by farmers.
100 prong.
- Soak before use: Before your first use, and before each subsequent use, soak the chasen in warm water for a minute or two to soften the bamboo and prevent it from becoming brittle.
- Rinse after use: Immediately after whisking, rinse the chasen under warm water, gently removing any matcha residue.
- Air dry: After rinsing, gently shake off any excess water and allow the chasen to air dry with the tines pointing downwards to prevent water from pooling in the handle.
- Store on a whisk stand: Use a chasen-tate (whisk stand) to hold the chasen in shape while it dries and to prevent it from warping.
- Avoid soap and harsh cleaning methods: Do not use soap or place the chasen in the dishwasher, as this can damage the bamboo.

Aikenka Bamboo Matcha Whisk

The Chasen
The chasen originated in Japan during the Muromachi period (1336–1573). Chasen-making is an intricate craft, with each whisk carefully hand-carved from a single piece of white bamboo or black bamboo and formed into delicate tines.
In chanoyu (the Japanese tea ceremony), the act of whisking is part of the larger meditative and spiritual ritual. The chasen represents mindfulness, harmony (wa), respect (kei), purity (sei), and tranquility (jaku)—core principles of the tea ceremony.
Using an electric whisk (like a milk frother) to prepare matcha is not inherently "bad", but it compromises several key aspects of traditional matcha preparation—especially when evaluated through the lens of authenticity, texture, flavour, and culture.
